Manchester United will be in the market for a new manager in the summer, unless they decide to extend Michael Carrick's contract at Old Trafford.
Carrick was appointed to replace Ruben Amorim in January, and he enjoyed an impressive start, winning his first four games in charge. Their performance levels have dropped off slightly since then, losing against Newcastle United last time out, but Carrick has built up some credit in the bank.
Whether Carrick gets the job on a permanent basis remains to be seen, but they might be better off heading in a new direction.
Carrick's experience at the top level is minimal, and he's yet to manage in Europe. United have the power to attract plenty of managers in the summer, and Julian Nagelsmann could be the ideal appointment.
Man Utd Must Appoint Manager Who Wants Job
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann biting his nails
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Nagelsmann has made it clear that he wants to take over at Manchester United in the summer.
The 38-year-old is currently in charge of the German national team ahead of the World Cup, but he could be available following the conclusion of the tournament later this year.
It's claimed that Carrick is also firmly in the race to be United's permanent manager heading into the 2026/2027 season, but United should be looking to go in a different direction.
Despite being just 38, Nagelsmann has already established himself as one of the best coaches in Europe. Managing Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim, and RB Leipzig at club level, before taking over the German national team, Nagelsmann has been in charge of some huge clubs and big-name players, amassing plenty of experience in European competitions.
Nagelsmann a Carrick Upgrade
Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick celebrates
There's no doubt that Nagelsmann would be an upgrade on Carrick, given his experience and record as a manager.
United can't make their appointment with too much emotion, and although it would be great for a former United player to take the reins and be successful, the club have to do what's right in terms of being able to progress.
Described as a 'genius' by journalist Julian Laurens, Nagelsmann is one of the most exciting young managers in the world, and, respectfully, he's comfortable a level above someone like Carrick, despite his impressive start to life at Old Trafford.
