While midfield is the top priority position for Manchester United in summer 2026, winger is expected to be closely behind.

United have abandoned the wingerless formation preferred by former boss Ruben Amorim, and now require at least one new winger to strengthen the club’s attacking options.

According to foreign newspaper Sport, Como winger Jesus Rodriguez is on Manchester United’s shortlist.

Jesus Rodriguez’s career so far

Jesus Rodriguez made his professional debut for Real Betis during the 2024/25 season, called into the first team squad by Manuel Pellegrini.

He played 32 first team games for the club, scoring three goals before being snapped up by ambitious Italian side Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas.

Como paid £20 million to sign Rodriguez, a club record fee. He has played 28 games for the Italian club already, scoring three goals and providing eight assists.

Rodriguez was called into the Spain international squad for the first time earlier this season and he is now battling to secure a World Cup place.

What has been said about Jesus Rodriguez?

Speaking after his acquisition, Cesc Fabregas explained: “Jesus is exactly the type of player we need at Como, fearless, direct, and full of energy. He has that natural flair to break lines and take defenders on.”

Spain boss Luis De La Fuente added last year: “We have been following him for some time. He played in the under-21 European Championship and has started the season very well.

“We believe this is the right moment. Jesus can bring us a great deal of enthusiasm, freshness, and boldness.”

Sell-on clause

Real Betis have a 12.5 per cent sell-on clause for Jesus Rodriguez stipulated into their sale agreement with Como, ABC Sevilla reports.

Betis’ decision to sell Rodriguez last summer enabled them to find the funds to sign Antony from Manchester United.

United enquired about Rodriguez in 2025

United In Focus reported in April 2025 that Manchester United enquired about Jesus Rodriguez in conversations with Real Betis about the Antony deal.

Talks did not progress, and the winger position was not a priority for United at the time due to the system.

Rodriguez would be a talented, and costly signing

After Como spent £20 million to sign Rodriguez, they are under no immediate hurry to sell a key player they have under contract to 2030.

Manchester United would need to pay at least double this fee to sign him.

This might end up being a bargain if Rodriguez turns into a world-leading talent and future Spain regular. At only 20-years-old, there is plenty of time for him to develop.

United just need to balance this against the funds available to spend on midfielders in the summer, which is going to be a bigger priority.
