Former Manchester United star Patrice Evra believes Luis Enrique would be "a dream coach" for the club as they consider their next managerial steps.

The Red Devils axed Ruben Amorim in January, putting Michael Carrick in charge until the end of the season. They had stated their intention to stick with their former player for the meantime, before appointing someone else long-term.

Enrique has proved himself to be among Europe's elite coaches and last term won the treble with PSG. He became the first man to lead the Parisians to the Champions League title having done the same with Barcelona, where he also won La Liga on two occasions.

The Spaniard's future at the Parc des Princes is unclear with reports claiming he's not signing a new deal in France - and Evra believes he would be the ideal candidate to take over on the red side of Manchester.

He told Stake: "I'm not talking to the Man United board or Sir Jim Ratcliffe, but in my honest opinion, with no disrespect to PSG or Nasser Al-Khelaifi, but Luis Enrique would be a dream coach for Man United.

"I love the man, I love his philosophy, what he went through in his personal life and overcame it shows his personality. The job he's done at PSG by bringing them a Champions League without Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe or Neymar, it's a fantastic job. Players would have to work really hard to play for Man United, they'll have to run a lot and I think Enrique would bring that."

United have previously gone after big names in the managerial world, but they have been unable to lead the club back to the summit of English football. Louis van Gaal had two years in Manchester before they hired Jose Mourinho as his replacement, but he lasted less than three seasons.

The plan at Old Trafford, which had Carrick in charge until the summer, could yet change if the ex-Middlesbrough boss makes himself impossible to ignore. He has led an upturn in results, putting the Red Devils back in charge of their own Champions League destiny.

Evra admits: "I don't think we should write off Michael Carrick, he's done a great job and we need to give him an opportunity". The club have previously hired a former player in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, which ended terribly despite signs of promise. The French claims "right now we need someone who understands the club and the players" - a box that Carrick would tick.
