Man Utd target Yan Diomande is generational, but 11-goal detail means he adds to Amad dilemma

Manchester United are in the market for a new winger in the summer and Yan Diomande is emerging as a top target for the Red Devils.

Earlier this month, Michael Carrick confirmed that Manchester United could target a left-sided winger in the upcoming summer transfer window.

United are showing interest in Yan Diomande, and after having success with Benjamin Sesko’s move from RB Leipzig, the Red Devils could return and push for a deal for the 19-year-old winger.

Diomande has an elite mentality and with 11 goals across all competitions this season, he is one of the brightest talents in European football.

Man United target Yan Diomande’s favourite position

Carrick confirmed that a left winger is on United’s shopping list as there is a general lack of depth on that flank beyond Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu.

Diomande does play on both wings for Leipzig, but interestingly, all 11 of his goals this season have been scored when he has started on the right.

As per Transfermarkt, Diomande has made 19 appearances on the right and scored 11 times, while scoring zero goals in seven appearances off the left wing.

Diomande even scored a quickfire hat-trick playing off the right this season. He has not had that same impact on the left.

But United don’t need another right-sided winger – it would only add to an already growing headache.

Yan Diomande would complicate Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo dilemma

Under Carrick, United have returned to a 4-2-3-1 shape and that means that both Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo are competing for position.

Mbeumo did play a handful of games as a central striker, but Benjamin Sesko’s scoring streak means he has now claimed that starting position.

Amad and Mbeumo are going head-to-head for one position, whereas they were building a strong partnership in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

Adding Diomande to the equation would improve the quality available to United’s attack, but it just adds even more competition to one of the strongest positions currently in the squad.

There is no denying that Diomande is a generational talent, but Ineos need to decide if the teenage star is what United need in 2026/27 or whether they should target a specialist left winger.
