Manchester United legend Paul Scholes decided to check in with teammate Roy Keane before asking Sir Alex Ferguson for a pay rise.
During his 26 years as Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson built up an intimidating reputation built on success.
Ferguson called Paul Scholes a world-class talent and hailed him as the “cleverest midfield player” in the club’s history.
Paul Scholes won an incredible 11 Premier League titles under Ferguson and cemented his status as a legend, but that didn’t stop him from fearing asking the Scot for a pay rise.

Paul Scholes recalls pay rise request with Sir Alex Ferguson
In the latest episode of The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Scholes told the story of when he was building up the courage to ask for a pay rise at United.
“My accountant was telling me ‘you need to go in now and ask for more money from the manager. I might have been mid-20s. There had been some interest from another club,” Scholes recalled.
“I saw Roy one morning, and I said ‘Roy I’m going to go and ask the manager for more money, what do you think?’

“He said: ‘You’re not happy with the contract you signed?’
“That was it. I thought what do I do now?”

Paul Scholes’ Man Utd contracts over the years
Scholes was, of course, part of the iconic Class of ’92 that graduated from United’s academy and went on to become one of the most successful teams in English history.
He signed his youth/trainee contract in 1991 and then signed on professional terms in 1993.
Scholes grew into a key player and played a pivotal role in the club’s Treble success in 1999.
Throughout his prestigious 18-year career at Old Trafford, Scholes signed several contract extensions and famously only played for the Red Devils.

According to The Guardian, Scholes signed a £13 million contract with United in 2001, earning him £50,000 per week.
He signed extensions in 2005, 2009 and 2010 and came back from retirement in a one-year deal between 2012 and 2013.
