Fabio Capello has urged Inter Milan manager Cristian Chivu not to get complacent toward the end of the Serie A season.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, Capello revealed the only way the Nerazzurri could lose the title.
Inter’s pursuit of a 21st Scudetto took a hit on Sunday as AC Milan eked out a narrow 1-0 win in the famous Derby della Madonnina.
Despite suffering their first league double at the hands of the Rossoneri since 2010/11, Inter remain in the driver’s seat.
Indeed, with only ten games left to go, they’re boasting a seven-point lead over Massimiliano Allegri’s side.
Therefore, it’s fair to say that Cristian Chivu is on his way to winning the title in his maiden season in charge.
However, there’s no room for complacency if Inter are to avoid another dramatic late-season collapse.
Fabio Capello Urges Inter Milan to Avoid Complacency in Serie A Finale
“With ten matchdays left – and a seven-point lead over Milan – logic suggests that at this stage only Inter can lose the title,” Capello said. “However, what’s on paper and what happens on the pitch do not always go hand in hand.
“Cristian Chivu has a significant and sufficient margin to reach the finish line first and safely. That’s provided he quickly rediscovers the original version of his team, starting with Saturday’s clash against Atalanta.
“Not the pale, slow, and rhythm-less copy seen in the derby defeat to Milan and on other occasions recently. That’s beginning with the Champions League double-header against the Norwegian side Bodo.
“For Cristian to triumph, he must remove the ‘monkey’ of the defeats suffered against Milan from the minds of Barella and his teammates.
“I would go into the dressing room and say: ‘Guys, we are the strongest. Let’s go back to proving it with calmness and by enjoying ourselves.’”
