‘Completely made sense’: Wes Brown says he could ‘see it both ways’ over Man Utd legend’s criticism

Former England and Manchester United defender Wes Brown has told Paul Scholes what he felt about his eye-catching comments around Michael Carrick last week.

Newcastle hosted Manchester United at St James’ Park last Wednesday and the 10-man Magpies inflicted a stunning 2-1 Premier League defeat on the Red Devils.

Michael Carrick was singled out by Paul Scholes, who pulled no punches towards the 44-year-old Manchester United legend over the Red Devils’ recent run of displays.

Scholes slammed Carrick for how United had been performing under him, despite the Newcastle result being the first loss the Red Devils had suffered under him.

Wes Brown shows Paul Scholes why the Man Utd legend’s remarks around Michael Carrick divided pundits and fans

Wes Brown linked up with former Manchester United teammates Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt on the latest episode of ‘The Good, The Bad & The Football’ podcast.

Scholes addressed the Michael Carrick comments that he made and the 51-year-old admitted that the meaning didn’t come across the way it should have done.

Brown added that he could see what Scholes actually meant when the former Man Utd and England midfielder explained to him what he was trying to convey.

“I can see it both ways,” he said.

“When Scholesy explained it to me, it completely made sense. But how I read it was as if he’s having a go at him.”

Scholes responded to Brown and insisted that his comments about interim head coach Carrick were not personal and were more observant about United’s performances.

“What Wes said, and I hadn’t heard that before, was that I was saying he’s just a lucky manager,” he explained.

“I wasn’t saying that, I was saying he’s a very talented manager because he’s getting results with a team that, for the last four games since the West Ham game, I didn’t think were playing very well, that’s all.”

Paul Scholes breaks his silence on his Man Utd and Michael Carrick remarks after he sparked major backlash

Following United’s defeat to Newcastle last week, Scholes found himself in the direct firing line with both supporters and former teammates, including Patrice Evra.

Scholes insisted that his comments were interpreted completely differently from what he actually meant after Man Utd’s superb turnaround in results under Carrick.

“I think people have just taken it differently from what was meant,” he said.

“The only thing I was saying was that I don’t think they played that well the last four games and he’s still managing to get results.

“We had the greatest manager in the world and he always said, sometimes you need a bit of luck.

“So, with sending-offs and different things that happen through games, sometimes you do need a bit of luck, that’s all I was saying.”

Fourth-place Aston Villa will now visit Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon and the Red Devils’ Premier League clash is slated for a 2pm kick-off in the UK.
