Report: Man Utd burst into race to sign assist machine with Newcastle now on the back foot

Manchester United have now jumped into the race to sign a "terrific" Borussia Dortmund player, in a blow for fellow suitors Newcastle United.

Man Utd eyeing summer signings despite managerial uncertainty

Michael Carrick has surpassed all expectations in his role as interim manager, with his side now firmly on course to qualify for the Champions League, although not everyone has been impressed by the performances.

Following the 2-1 defeat against Newcastle last time out, Paul Scholes suggested the recent displays have been far from good enough, and the United legend has now addressed his Instagram post, which appeared to criticise Carrick.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has confirmed there is a chance Carrick lands the job on a permanent basis, saying: "United love Michael Carrick, they are really, really excited by him and what he has done.

"But they don’t want to get carried away, just as many accused them of doing with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But this feels very different. There is a real belief that Carrick could be nearing perfection for the club going forward."

However, the Englishman is far from the only option, with it recently being revealed that Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann would be keen to take the reins.

Even though it remains unclear who will be in the Man United dugout next season, they have started making plans for the summer, having burst into the race to sign Borussia Dortmund star Julian Ryerson.

That is according to a report from Football Insider, which names Newcastle as rival suitors for the right-back, but Eddie Howe's side are on the back foot, given that they are languishing in mid-table, while the Red Devils are on course to finish in the top five.

He's keen on a move to Anfield.

Ryerson could be "terrific" signing for Man Utd

The 28-year-old is a right-back by trade, but he has often featured a little further forward for Dortmund this season, displaying his attacking qualities by amassing 14 assists in 33 matches across all competitions, including four in one game.

Lauded as "terrific" by podcaster Stefan Buczko, the Norwegian could be an upgrade on Diogo Dalot from an attacking point of view, with the Portugal international setting up just three goals this term.

The Dortmund star has also won back possession in the final third an average of 0.7 times per 90 in the Bundesliga this season, with only Fabio Silva and Maximilian Beier recording a stronger average amongst his teammates.

With Ryerson evidently a well-rounded full-back, capable of winning back possession and contributing on the front foot, Man United should definitely launch a summer move.
