Reliving Amad Diallo's magic vs AC Milan 5 years on

Amad Diallo scored his first goal for Manchester United against AC Milan in the Europa League in 2021, but now the Ivorian winger is among the star players in the first team.

It has been quite the journey for Amad at Manchester United, transitioning from a prodigy in waiting to a proven, versatile star.

Amad spent time on loan at Rangers and Sunderland before breaking into United’s first team under Erik ten Hag. He was surprisingly utilised as a right wing-back when Ruben Amorim was in charge, but Michael Carrick has allowed the Ivory Coast star to return to his natural right-wing position.

In terms of this season, Amad has made 24 appearances with five goal contributions (two goals, three assists), so he will be aiming to add to his tally with nine games remaining.

Amad Diallo scores first Man Utd goal with backwards header vs AC Milan

United crashed out of the Champions League group stages in the 2020/21 season, after finishing third behind Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig.

As one of the third-place finishers in the Champions League, United entered the Europa League knockout phase, making it their fifth time competing in Europe’s second-rate competition.

In the round of 16, United took on AC Milan, with the first leg ending 1-1 at Old Trafford.

An 18-year-old Amad scored his first goal for United with his first effort on goal for the club, but Simon Kjaer grabbed a late equaliser to take an important away goal back to Milan for the second leg.

Milan performed better in the first half and had a goal ruled out by VAR for handball, while Harry Maguire missed a sitter before the half-time whistle when he hit the post.

Amad replaced an injured Anthony Martial before he found the back of the net for the first time since his transfer from Atalanta earlier that year.

It was Amad’s first shot for the club in just his third appearance.

Unfortunately, United were unable to add to their lead despite a clear opportunity for Dan James in the second half. The Red Devils paid the price for that when Simon Kjaer headed a corner kick past Dean Henderson.

Amad Diallo broke record with header against AC Milan

United spent big money to bring Amad to Old Trafford, but that has since proven to be a brilliant piece of business.

Amad’s goal against AC Milan saw him become the youngest non-British player to score for United in a major European competition at the age of 18 years and 243 days.

As of March 11, 2026, Amad has made 88 appearances for United, scoring 16 goals and registering 15 assists.

The sky is the limit for the 23-year-old.
