'Unique case': Why talented Man Utd duo are perfect answer to Rio Ferdinand's defensive concerns– opinion

The long-term futures of Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro at Old Trafford are essential to sorting out a major problem that Rio Ferdinand highlighted at Manchester United.

Leny Yoro has had a mixed second season at Old Trafford, but the 20-year-old Frenchman remains a key part of the Manchester United first-team squad.

Ayden Heaven, on the other hand, has been sporadically playing for the Red Devils and has impressed when he has been handed important first-team minutes.

Whether it is Heaven or Yoro, their place in the United squad is an important stepping stone for developing young centre-backs, as Rio Ferdinand wants at Premier League clubs.

Rio Ferdinand singles out Leny Yoro amid a major development issue at Man Utd and other Premier League clubs

Leny Yoro was only 18 years old when the Red Devils signed him from French side Lille ahead of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Paying an initial fee of £52.18m in 2024, including agreeing to £6.73m in add-ons, Yoro’s promising and exciting talent has been shown on the pitch for the Red Devils.

The Manchester United star still has a long road ahead of him in his development, especially with adapting to the physical demands of the Premier League.

Rio Ferdinand said that Leny Yoro is an example of a “unique case” at a big Premier League club, where a youngster is playing on a regular basis in the first team.

“Yeah, and Leny Yoro’s a unique case,” he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents.

“Like you said, young centre-backs, how many young centre-backs have come through at Manchester United and played consistently for the first team?”

Man United in the last 10, 20 years? Man United, Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal. Go on. You’ve got to go on. Who have they brought through?

“I’m saying Liverpool, the top teams. What centre-backs have come through in those clubs and played centre-back?”

Ayden Heaven can mirror what Leny Yoro is doing for Man Utd and address Rio Ferdinand’s key defensive example

Ferdinand did not namecheck Ayden Heaven in the same way as Yoro, but the former Arsenal talent can pull off what his Man Utd teammate has done so far.

Heaven, who left the Gunners in 2025 and signed for the Red Devils, is only 19 years old and is developing with the first-team squad instead of the youth academy.

Ferdinand added that former Man Utd teammates Wes Brown and Jonny Evans were examples of youth academy talent that never played regularly for the Red Devils.

“Man United, probably Wes Brown, they didn’t end up playing consistently,” he explained.

“Jonny Evans didn’t end up playing consistently [either].”

United legend Ferdinand later added: “I’m hoping and I feel they will be helping someone like Leny Yoro [at Man Utd].

“But I think this goes across the board at all clubs. Because I know Man City is struggling.”

Both Yoro and Heaven could play key roles in helping United stand out from other Premier League clubs with the development of young centre-backs in their squads.

Considering the early signs of talent from Yoro, irrespective of his form, Heaven is more than capable of doing the same if the right development structure is in place.
