'Laughing stock' - Unai Emery criticism should end all Man United manager links

Manchester United face Unai Emery’s Aston Villa next and the Spanish manager has previously been linked with the Old Trafford hot seat.

Once Ruben Amorim was sacked, Unai Emery naturally emerged as a candidate for the Manchester United job because of his success at Aston Villa.

Former Villa sporting director Monchi believes Emery would succeed at United, and he has a chance to go head-to-head with the current frontrunner, Michael Carrick, on Sunday afternoon.

But even if Emery does manage to beat Carrick, Ineos should not be looking at the Spaniard because of his previous record at big clubs.

Who do you think will be Man Utd manager at the start of the 2026/27 season?

🔮 Let us know who you believe will and should be in charge? Who will Ineos appoint?

Man Utd must not turn to Unai Emery

Throughout his managerial career, Emery’s biggest successes have come at Sevilla, Villarreal and Aston Villa.

The Spaniard thrives at making an ambitious club into challengers, but his record at European giants is less impressive. Emery failed at Arsenal, lasting just 18 months before being sacked.

Emery had a 55% win rate at Arsenal and failed to qualify for the Champions League in his first season. In his second season, following a run of seven games without a win, he was sacked.

Before his time at Arsenal, Emery was in charge of Paris Saint-Germain. While he did win the Ligue 1 on one occasion, he also lost the title to Monaco in 2016/17 and failed to reach their Champions League targets.

Emery famously threw away a 4-0 lead over Barcelona when PSG lost 6-1 at Camp Nou to crash out of the Champions League.

Unai Emery was a ‘laughing stock’ at PSG

United need a manager capable of handling the biggest spotlight in European football, and while Emery has experience at giant clubs, his record should concern Ineos greatly.

Former French forward Jerome Rothen reflected on Emery’s time at PSG and labelled him a “laughing stock”.

As quoted by OneFootball, Rothen said: “His time at PSG was a failure.

“Everything he put in place, it did not work. In addition, unfortunately for him, in terms of image, he is the coach of the worst episode in the history of the club. So there is necessarily an impact on his image. PSG has become the laughing stock of the whole of France, and Unai Emery was part of it.”

Emery has made great progress with Villa, and he achieved similar success at Villarreal and Sevilla, but he has proven he doesn’t have the right management to lead a giant club to European dominance.
