Man Utd signed the Brazilian international from Wolves in the 2025 summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a decent debut campaign at United so far, with six goals and three assists for his new club. United are in a good position to secure Champions League qualification at the end of the season, with the wider ambition to seriously challenge for the Premier League title in two years.

Cunha brings a wealth of Premier League experience to the United side and has impressed with his versatility in the forward line. Although he is not the most natural option on the left wing, he has looked good when utilised as a false nine and as an attacking midfielder earlier in the season. There is still plenty more to come from the former Wolves star, and he believes it won't be long before there is more success at Old Trafford.

'Manchester United are a sleeping giant’

Manchester United last won the Premier League in 2013, while their last Champions League triumph came all the way back in 2008. United have still won the Europa League, two FA Cups, and two League Cups since Alex Ferguson retired, but have not been able to seriously challenge for the two biggest honours available.

United have made it their mission to compete for both the Premier League and Champions League by 2028, and Matheus Cunha is confident it can happen. “Saying it didn’t cross my mind would be a lie,” he told Caze TV. “But Manchester United already marked me a lot. I just thank God for the opportunity.

“At no point do I think about the negative side of Manchester United. For me, it’s an extraordinary club. I joke that the giant is sleeping, and that we are going to wake it up.”

Cunha also spoke about his position on the pitch and how he grew up playing as an attacking midfielder rather than a striker. He added: “In Brazil I was always a midfielder. In my whole time there, I played as a number ten. I started scoring goals there and it just kept going. In Switzerland they told me to play as a striker and I scored ten goals in three months.”

“Pre-Olympic team, striker. Olympic team, Olympic champion, striker. Atletico Madrid, striker. People forgot. When people say ‘Matheus became a midfielder’, it’s funny to me. I didn’t become one – I went back to where I always was. It helped me understand other positions and the game as a whole. Today I feel like a much more complete and versatile player because of that.”
