Former 33 G/A Tottenham star puts his name in the ring for potential job opening at N17 as Igor …

Tottenham could end up hiring Gus Poyet if Igor Tudor is shown the door in the coming days

Four matches. Four losses. 14 goals conceded. Five goals scored. The writing is pretty much on the wall for Igor Tudor at Tottenham by the look of it. The Croatian tactician was brought in to steady the ship at N17 after the club decided to sack Thomas Frank midway through the season. However, what the former Juventus boss has delivered is the complete opposite of what the Lilywhites were expecting.

Tudor has left the club stranded in the bottom half of the Premier League table, just a point above the relegation zone. There is a real prospect of seeing the North Londoners drop into the second division in the coming months if they do not return to winning ways in the upcoming matches. The fans appear to have lost faith in the squad, and the players have shown little desire or fight to turn the club’s fortunes around since Tudor came into the picture.

They are well within reach of entering the relegation zone after failing to win their last 11 league matches. To make matters worse, Spurs are also on the cusp of getting knocked out of the Champions League following a humiliating 5-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Last 16 knockout tie. Nothing seems to be going right for the Lilywhites, and there have been no clear signs of improvement under the new interim boss.

Gus Poyet is keen to take charge of Tottenham until the end of the season

Not many fans would have imagined Tottenham facing the real prospect of relegation this season. The Lilywhites have already changed managers once this season after sacking Thomas Frank in February and replacing him with Igor Tudor on an interim basis. The Croat has not done a great job himself and has already looked out of his depth at N17. There is a strong possibility that he may also face the sack, which would mean that a third manager could be appointed for the remainder of the season.

Gus Poyet, who had a 33 G/A stint at Tottenham, has now put his name forward for consideration for the Spurs job, stating that he might be the right man to help the Lilywhites avoid relegation this season. Speaking to Sunsport (via The Sun), Poyet said,

“With respect to Igor, yes – for sure. I mean, I know everything. Sometimes they don’t put me in that position. But you know, I remember before Igor Tudor got the job, people were talking about Robbie Keane – rightly so. They were talking about Tim Sherwood – rightly so. Even Harry Redknapp, they were asking him. And I was sitting at home and I’m thinking, ‘Why not me?’ I’ve been there. I know the place, I know the relegation battle.”

The former Spurs star added,

“I know what needs to be done. Well, at least I have the experience. I know the Premier League. It’s sometimes funny that your name is not related there, but that’s the way it is now. You need to put yourself in the press. If they think it’s me [for the job] I would be more than happy but it wasn’t me. And now the only thing that I want as a coach is for Igor Tudor to sort it out for him, as a coach. To have that feeling that he sorted it out and Tottenham stay up. Nothing else.”

Gus Poyet believes he could be the right man for the job at N17, as he understands how the North London club operates after working there as both an assistant manager and a player. The Uruguayan tactician also has experience in relegation battles after helping Sunderland avoid the drop zone in 2016. He is well aware of what needs to be done and believes he could help Spurs beat relegation and maintain their top-flight status in the coming months.

Igor Tudor’s time at N17 appears to be coming to an end. The result against Liverpool could prove to be the final nail in the coffin for the Croatian tactician. Spurs would then need to ensure they appoint a replacement who understands the values of the club and knows how the Lilywhites operate. Only then will they have a chance of avoiding relegation this season and maintaining their top-flight status.

Will Gus Poyet come under consideration for the job at N17? Or will Spurs opt for a safer option instead? Let us know in the comments below.
