Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with reports suggesting the Portuguese youngster could command a fee of around £60 million as interest intensifies ahead of the summer transfer window.
Manchester United are understood to have identified Fernandes as a “high-priority” target as they plan a significant midfield rebuild at Old Trafford. Club scouts have tracked the 21-year-old closely throughout the season, with decision-makers impressed by his performances and his ability to operate as a modern box-to-box midfielder.
Fernandes has been one of the few bright spots in a difficult campaign for West Ham, who have spent much of the 2025-26 season battling near the Premier League relegation zone. The midfielder has contributed three goals and three assists in league action while regularly featuring in central midfield roles, showcasing his energy, pressing ability and creativity.
United’s interest comes as the club prepares for changes in midfield personnel. Veteran Casemiro is expected to depart at the end of the season, while the club’s hierarchy is eager to add younger, more dynamic options to complement emerging talents such as Kobbie Mainoo.
Fernandes joined West Ham in August 2025 from Southampton in a deal worth more than £40 million, signing a five-year contract with the London club. The Portugal Under-21 international quickly established himself as a regular starter and became one of the Hammers’ most influential midfielders.
However, West Ham could face a difficult decision if formal offers arrive in the summer. Reports indicate the club may consider selling key players to address financial pressures following significant losses in recent accounts. Fernandes’ rising profile and market value could make him one of the club’s most valuable assets should they decide to cash in.
Manchester United are not the only club monitoring the situation. Arsenal, Manchester City and several European sides are also believed to be keeping tabs on the midfielder, potentially setting up a competitive transfer race if West Ham signal a willingness to negotiate.
