Manchester United could be boosted by the return of Mason Mount for this weekend’s clash with Aston Villa.

The midfielder has not played for nearly two months with an unspecified injury – and has made only ten Premier League starts this term.

None of those have come under Michael Carrick – although he did play one minute of the 2-0 win over Man City in the interim’s first game.

He will be hoping for more at Old Trafford on Sunday in a game that sees third placed United take on Villa in fourth in the race for Champions League qualification.

"Mason is back with the group, which is fantastic," said Carrick. "He's an important player for us, Mason, and to have him back and involved is a good step for us.

"He is not 100% in terms of back, because he's only trained a very small amount of time, but he's back and that's good for us so we'll see whether he's involved or not on Sunday, but it's a big step for him, so we're happy with that. That's it in terms of players coming back for now."

That means United will be without Patrick Dorgu, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui.
