Napoli sporting director issues statement on Scott McTominay’s future after Man Utd return links

Napoli director Giovanni Manna has played down speculation that Scott McTominay could leave the club.

Back in February, Napoli’s global business development officer Leonardo Giammarioli had suggested the club would struggle to resist bids for their top stars, specifically mentioning Scott McTominay.

Italian outlet TMW subsequently reported Manchester United would be at the front of the queue for McTominay if Napoli started inviting offers.

Napoli insist that they are still planning for a future with McTominay, with Giovanni Manna optimistic he will continue with the project.

Giovanni Manna spoke to Sportsmediaset to explain Napoli’s firm desire for McTominay to stay put, and confidence the midfielder feels the same way.

Manna explained: “Scott is an important player, he’s happy to be in Naples; I think he shows it when he plays and when he experiences the city.

“He has two years left on his contract, and we have an extremely clear and frank relationship with him. We’re talking; it’s not a current issue.

“We know Scott’s importance, but to date we haven’t received any offers, partly because the player has never expressed a desire to leave.”

McTominay, 29, has been a big hit in Serie A since his surprise exit from Manchester United in 2024.

United cashed in on McTominay for PSR reasons, to raise funds to sign Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain.

While it would not be a surprise to see McTominay wear the United shirt again one day, it is not a shock to hear Napoli want to keep him – and that he desires to stay.

McTominay happy in Italy

Scott McTominay spoke last month to convey his ‘love’ for Napoli. He has no immediate plans to leave the club.

He was quoted via The Sun: “I am extremely happy here and, as far as I am concerned, I am a Napoli player.

“It is all I think about. The future is very important, and I could see myself in Napoli for a long time.

“I love this place. Difficulties have been minimal, my family is happy and I’m happy.”

McTominay’s attacking tendencies are not the specific qualities United require in a midfielder this summer, so it is good to draw a line under this one for now.
