Manchester United have the chance to bring in some new faces this summer

Manchester United have ‘scouted’ West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes ahead of the summer, according to talkSPORT. The Red Devils are being linked with a swoop for the player in the next transfer window. His contract at the London Stadium expires in June 2030.

The Red Devils are back in action this weekend against Aston Villa at home. They will be looking to bounce back from their defeat at Newcastle United last time out. Michael Carrick’s side are sat in 3rd place in the Premier League table behind Arsenal and Manchester City.

Manchester United keen on West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes

United may have identified Fernandes as someone to boost their midfield ranks. If he joined, he would give them more competition and depth in the middle of the park. In addition, he could fill the void left by Casemiro’s impending exit.

Fernandes, 21, has been a standout player for West Ham since his move last year. He has become one of their most prized assets and they could face a battle to keep hold of him down the line amid expected attention from elsewhere. The Portugal youth international has made 27 league appearances for them this season and he has chipped in with three goals.

He switched to England back in 2024 to join Southampton and went on to play 46 matches for the Saints, finding the net on four occasions. Prior to his transfer, he rose up through the academy at Sporting Lisbon. He was also loaned out to Estoril.

After signing for West Ham, he said at the time: "I'm very happy to be here. I'm very excited to play for West Ham. I think it's a big step for me. It's a big club, a massive club. The project, the stadium, the city, everything.

"I want to try to play football, enjoy football, not just run and try to score, but try to play good football. I think the most important thing is to try to give everything every day."

Meanwhile, their ex-boss Graham Potter added: "Mateus is a young player who has made impressive progress in the early part of his career, and we are delighted to have secured his signing.

“He gained valuable experience in the Premier League last year with Southampton and is someone we really feel can help improve us and fit into what we are trying to build and develop at the club.”
