'The warning': Why Michael Carrick's honest Jadon Sancho assessment explains Man Utd's other £40m player sale – opinion

Michael Carrick’s eye-opening analysis of Jadon Sancho’s decline at Manchester United ahead of the Aston Villa match should be a massive reality check for Chelsea star Alejandro Garnacho.

The 44-year-old was a key part of the Manchester United coaching staff under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when the Red Devils splashed out big on Jadon Sancho in 2021.

Michael Carrick returned to Old Trafford in January and Jadon Sancho is still classed as a United first-team player, but the former England star is on loan at Aston Villa.

Despite signing for Aston Villa on deadline day last September, Sancho has been unable to turn around his declining fortunes under manager Unai Emery.

Was Garnacho’s ‘attitude’ the issue, or is he just not suited to the Premier League’s top level?

Michael Carrick’s ‘natural’ point about Jadon Sancho should send a clear-cut message to Alejandro Garnacho

Jadon Sancho has netted only once and registered one assist in 29 matches across all competitions for Aston Villa since the start of his season-long loan spell in 2025.

The Villa winger won’t be an issue for Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick on Sunday due to him not being eligible to play against his parent club.

However, Sancho’s fall from the top of his career at United has been nothing short of remarkable after his initial spell at Borussia Dortmund put him on the map.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund star never looked close to replicating his scintillating Bundesliga form in the Premier League, with his £73m price tag weighing him down.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, Michael Carrick suggested that it was “natural” for a player like Sancho not to work out at a big club.

“You can never be surprised with anything in football,” he said, as per the Manchester Evening News.

“I think it’s one of those things. Sometimes you come to a club, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t quite work.

“That’s natural, it happens at every club. Jadon’s got talent, that’s why he came to the club to start with and he’s had some really good moments.

“For whatever reason, I don’t know, I’ve not been here for a period of time.”

Alejandro Garnacho should look at former Man Utd teammate Jadon Sancho for his biggest warning

Alejandro Garnacho might be in his debut season with Chelsea, but Carrick’s powerful assessment of Sancho could be a prediction for his future as well.

The 21-year-old Spain-born winger has only netted once and registered four assists in 18 Premier League matches for the Blues since his £40m move last summer.

Garnacho has found the back of the net seven times in total across 33 matches, with the former United winger failing to light up the world at Stamford Bridge so far.

The United youth academy product was all but certain to leave Old Trafford in 2025 after his relationship with former Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim fell apart.

Garnacho was handed a fresh slate with Chelsea, but the Argentina international feels like he could slowly be heading in Sancho’s direction instead of improving.

Sancho spent the 2024-25 season out on loan at Chelsea and was later shipped back to Old Trafford after the Blues paid a penalty fee to avoid signing him permanently.

Garnacho might want to take a closer look at what United legend Carrick said about former club teammate Sancho if he wants to avoid meeting the same fate as him.
