Manchester United will aim to acquire some reinforcements to their ranks this summer
Manchester United have held ‘initial talks’ over a deal for RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba, according to TEAMtalk. The Red Devils are reportedly keen on luring the player to England this summer. They have the chance to bring in some new faces when the next transfer window opens up for business.
The North West outfit are positioned in 3rd place in the Premier League table behind Arsenal and Manchester City. They were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United away last time out. Michael Carrick’s side will be looking to bounce back with a win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford this weekend.
Manchester United linked with RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba
Lukeba, 23, joined Leipzig back in 2023. Prior to his move to Germany, he rose up through the academy at Lyon. He was a regular for the Ligue 1 giants at various different youth levels as a youngster before breaking into their first-team in 2021.
The centre-back went on to play 68 matches and chipped in with four goals from the back. His current club then swooped in for his signature and he hasn’t looked back since. They could now face a serious battle to retain his services amid attention from elsewhere.
Lukeba, who is a France international with one cap to his name, has been a key player for Leipzig over the last three campaigns. He has become one of their most prized assets and they will be desperate to keep hold of him for as long as possible. The Lyon-born man has played 95 games for them to date and is closing in on 100.
Carrick will want to see a reaction from United against Aston Villa. Speaking after their defeat to Newcastle, he said: "Why was the character lacking? It wasn't. It was just the quality and the performance. Not the character. We wanted to win. It's easy to throw that out when you don't win a game of football.
"We weren't there in terms of quality. Credit to Newcastle. They deserved to win tonight. It hurts me to say that but that's how it was. We need to get back to working and be better for the next game.
"We've lost one game, we haven't played well enough but in the grand scheme of things but we are in a good position."
