Man Utd youngster makes injury return, Michael Carrick's new De Ligt solution - Opinion

Matthijs de Ligt has been out for three months, leaving Manchester United light at the back. However, Tyler Fredricson’s return to action offers more options for Michael Carrick.

Manchester United are concerningly light at the back, with Matthijs de Ligt’s season potentially finished already, given we are two months from the end, with little indication of his return.

De Ligt’s absence, combined with Lisandro Martinez being out for United, means there are just three senior defenders available, all of whom have had their own issues over the past 18 months.

But now, United has another option in Tyler Fredricson.

Tyler Fredricson could give Manchester United defensive depth to see out this season

Fredricson made his Manchester United debut last season, becoming academy graduate number 254, but never managed to kick on further.

This season, Fredricson was hooked at half-time against Grimsby, after which Amorim didn’t trust him again.

However, now under a new head coach with centre-back injuries, Fredricson could find himself back in the fold soon enough after his return from injury during United’s U21 win against Southampton.

Fredricson has only just returned, having been out months through injury which also prevented him from heading on loan in January.

During the January transfer window, Fredricson missed out on moving to Belgium due to his unfortunately timed injury. While Fredricson also missed a Celtic move, both of which might have been huge for his development.

But now he’s back in action and looked very solid for the U21s, which could earn him a return to the first-team.

Fredricson was an unexpected academy graduate for Manchester United

It was last Easter that Fredricson’s unexpected debut for United came, with few anticipating he would be a first team player as he wasn’t in the limelight.

Fredricson had a brilliant debut, but these heights were never quite reached, which is why a loan in January was heavily considered.

The youngster will now hope to get himself back on the first-team bench, ready to contribute should any issues arise with Ayden Heaven, Harry Maguire or Leny Yoro.

Then, this coming summer needs to see Fredricson sent on a loan which helps him grow, preferably in Scotland or abroad.
