The 2025/26 campaign as a whole has seen a lot of upheaval outside of the Newcastle United senior squad.

Back in October,  Becky Langley, the popular manager of the women’s team, parted ways with the club after a period of poor results, despite managing the club way up into the second division.

And in the U-21s, two lead coaches departed in the space of five months, as both Diarmuid O’Carroll and Adam Lawrence stepped down, the latter doing so again after a rather poor run of results.

Some serious stability has been needed in the U-21s for some time now, and it looks like we’re finally getting it…

The club has confirmed that Robbie Stockdale will stay on as the new permanent lead coach of Newcastle United’s U-21s.

Stockdale has served as the interim boss since Adam Lawrence’s departure back in January, and has overseen a significant upturn in form for the Young Magpies in recent weeks.

With just one loss in our last seven games, it’s massively boosted our hopes of qualifying for the elimination play-offs, where we currently sit just one point behind 16th place Everton.

And Stockdale’s strong performances have come after a lot of changes on-and-off the pitch of course, as a number of our U-21 stars find themselves on the periphery of being called up into the senior squad, which hasn’t always given Stockdale the very best to work with.

Discussing his appointment, Stockdale told NUFC.co.uk: “It’s a real privilege to take on this role on a permanent basis.

“I’ve loved working with the players and staff over the last year and I’m proud of the progress the group has made.

“It’s a fantastic environment to be part of and I’m looking forward to continuing the work we’ve started and helping our young players take the next steps on their journey towards first-team football.”

Stockdale’s predecessor, Adam Lawrence, may have made the switch from the North East to the North West, but it’s good to see the club instil its faith and support in Stockdale to deliver results in his absence.

Since Lawrence’s exit, Stockdale has enjoyed a strong run of form since stepping in, with the Young Mags winning once again on Friday night, as Sean Neave and Park Seung-Soo scored in a 2-0 win over Blackburn.

Academy Director Steve Harper was full of praise for Stockdale: “Robbie has been an excellent addition to the Academy since joining and we’re looking forward to supporting him as he continues to develop in this role.

“He has amassed a wealth of playing and coaching experience that he passes on to our young players every day, and he has built an outstanding relationship with the group. They respond to him, trust him and understand the standards he sets.

“He has a clear understanding of what the pathway needs to look like for our players to progress into a first-team environment, and he works extremely well with staff across the football club to support that journey.”
