Michael Carrick has exceeded all expectations as the interim head coach at Manchester United, igniting a race for the Champions League, which previously looked far-fetched.
However, when appointed, Michael Carrick’s target was Champions League qualification, no matter how unlikely it seemed, but now Manchester United are in the driving seat.
The result of his early success is that Carrick is now a favourite to get the job this summer, with club legend Wayne Rooney throwing his support behind his former teammate.
United fans are also behind Carrick, but the man whose decision really matters, Jim Ratcliffe, has now had his say.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe shares verdict on Michael Carrick at Manchester United
Ratcliffe has been at the Formula One in China this weekend supporting Ineos-owned Mercedes, and Sky Sports‘ journalist Craig Slater managed to grab an interview with him.
“What about Manchester United and Michael Carrick and the job he’s doing?” Slater asked.
“He’s doing an excellent job, yeah, yeah, absolutely”, Ratcliffe responded.

The journalist then continued, “Could he get the job permanently if this carries on?”
But Ratcliffe snubbed the question. “No, I’m not going there.”
Finally, Slater asked, “Listen, but what about Champions League? That’s a realistic ambition now. Are you thinking that’s a chance?
Ratcliffe agreed, but insisted the race isn’t done yet. “Yeah, well, yeah, clearly we’re thinking about that, but it’s still seven or eight games to go, so still a while yet.”
Having been caught watching the screens over Toto Wolff’s shoulder in China, Ratcliffe’s mind will likely be on Mercedes’ domination this season with a front-row lockout ahead of tomorrow’s Grand Prix.
So his lack of clarity on Carrick is unsurprising.
Do you agree? Is Michael Carrick the best managerial option?
Is Champions League qualification enough? Or do you need to see more?

Ratcliffe isn’t the right person to ask about Manchester United manager decisions
Hearing Ratcliffe’s praise for Carrick is good and surely adds confidence for the current United coaching staff, but ultimately, the decision won’t fall to him.
Ratcliffe famously stated Ruben Amorim had three years; however, after falling out with Jason Wilcox, the Portuguese boss was gone.
The decision over who gets the permanent position for United will come down to Wilcox, Omar Berrada, and Christopher Vivell, with Ratcliffe likely just having the final say.
Carrick is much further in consideration right now than Ratcliffe’s shutting-down response suggests. However, that being said, Carrick needs to find form this weekend, otherwise he could quickly be written off.
