Ineos have put a priority on signing wonderkids and young talents at Manchester United but the importance of senior leaders cannot be overstated.
The shift in transfer strategy since the Ineos takeover has been noticeable at Manchester United, and it has largely been a success so far.
The strategy of signing wonderkids is a positive shift towards long-term planning at Old Trafford, but it’s also important to make sure there are good role models and leaders in the first-team dressing room.
In the 3-1 win over Aston Villa, Bruno Fernandes was excellent again, and fellow veteran Casemiro was on the scoresheet for the seventh time this season.

Man United’s four senior leaders led by example vs Aston Villa
Fernandes overtook David Beckham’s assist record by setting up two goals in the second-half performance against Villa, while Casemiro added to his goal tally in his final season at Old Trafford.
Further back in defence, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were excellent both in and out of possession.
In a team surrounded by young talent such as Leny Yoro, Kobbie Mainoo, Senne Lammens, Benjamin Sesko and Amad Diallo, the four oldest players in United’s team stood out.

Maguire was excellent against Villa and he is the perfect role model for young defenders like Ayden Heaven and Yoro. Likewise, Shaw has been a role model to youngsters this season and his improved availability has meant he has been a leader on the pitch this season, too.
Maguire (33), Shaw (30), Fernandes (31) and Casemiro (34) are United’s most senior players and they provide an experienced spine in Carrick’s side.

Ineos must keep hold of Man United’s leaders for 2026/27
It is already confirmed that Casemiro will leave United at the end of the season, bringing an end to his four-year career in Manchester.
Replacing Casemiro has immediately become a top priority for Ineos in the upcoming summer transfer window. United need a top-class midfielder capable of being as dominant and involved as the Brazilian has been since arriving from Real Madrid.
Last summer, United chiefs were open to selling Fernandes, but his performances this season have made him a frontrunner for the Player of the Year award. Ineos must do whatever possible to keep hold of the Portuguese playmaker.

Maguire is in talks for a new deal, and his leadership at the back is essential. The same can be said for Shaw, who has been rejuvenated this season, appearing in every Premier League game so far.
Losing Casemiro’s leadership, experience and winning mentality is already a huge blow for United. The other three must be kept on the books, and they showed why in their performance against Villa.
