Carrick’s target was Champions League football, and United are moving closer and closer to securing this, with the latest win the biggest yet.
United are now comfortably third in the table, and speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Roy Keane was asked about the club’s chances of securing Champions League football.
He had a clear response.
“Absolute cert for it, they’ve no distractions, they can just focus on the games and get recovery in between the games. United looked comfortable today. An absolute cert for that Champions League spot.”

Michael Owen agreed while on punditry for Premier League Productions with Keane, adding that he even thinks United could finish second.
“Man Utd have absolutely qualified for the Champions League. The momentum is getting more and more. They’ve probably got more chance of coming second and catching Man City than they have of dropping down. It’s an absolute certainty.”

With eight games left to play, United are six points clear of sixth, and that is a significant gap. Such a commanding position cannot be wasted by United, as Champions League football would be vital.
Wayne Rooney has said Carrick gets the permanent job if United qualify for Europe’s elite competition.
Of the four teams in contention, United are undoubtedly in the best form and will soon face Chelsea and Liverpool, with those games likely to determine whether Carrick faces a fight or not for Champions League football.
United haven’t played Champions League football since 2023, and not since the new tournament configuration arrived.
