The future of Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford could be impacted after Barcelona ’s presidential election has taken place. The forward is currently on a season-long loan with the Spanish giants.

The deal includes an option to make the move permanent for a £26 million fee in the summer. It’s previously been reported that Barcelona intend to trigger the clause, however, uncertainty around the presidential elections caused some speculation over whether that could be the case.

The elections at the club took place on Sunday, with Joan Laporta re-elected to his role for the next five years. "First of all, I want to dedicate a few words of gratitude to this wonderful club we have,” he said once the result was announced.

"It's great to see that members can still choose who represents us.

This passion is a joy, it makes the club special, so thanks to Barça and all the members that voted today in a display of democracy."

The news looks to be positive for Rashford, with Laporta said to have the England international at the heart of his plans set out in his manifesto. Speaking earlier this week, Laporta confirmed that work was being done on a potential deal.

"We could extend the loan further; it depends on what Deco wants,” he said.

“There are formulas, such as paying part of the buy option to Manchester United and figuring out the rest later.”

It has been reported that Barcelona have been locked in talks with United over adeal, but United are refusing to lower the price or restructure the deal to make Rashford’s move permanent in the summer. It’s added that keeping Rashford is manager Hansi Flick’s top priority.

The re-election of Laporta makes Rashford’s staying at Barcelona look more likely compared to if Victor Font had won the vote. However, it seems that a deal could still face hurdles.

After a positive start to the season, Rashford’s form has tailed off slightly. This weekend saw him left as an unused substitute in the 5-2 win over Sevilla in La Liga, with his last goal for the club coming at the end of January.
