Michael Carrick looks set to be in contention to take over as the permanent Man United manager next season.
If he does, Carrick will want backing in the transfer market to turn this United side into a real title contender. Fresh reports are suggesting that the Red Devils are looking to make a move for one of Arsenal’s long-term targets.
Man United considering Nico Williams move
Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams has shown how much of a talent he is over the past few years. The 23-year-old blasted onto the radar of Premier League clubs during his performances for Spain at Euro 2024, and he has since continued to impress in La Liga for Bilbao, after signing a new contract in the summer.
Despite signing a new deal, reports in Spain indicate that Bilbao could sell Williams for the right price, and Premier League teams are keen. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Man United are seriously considering a move for the Spanish international, and could be willing to pay his £87m release clause to bring him to Old Trafford in the summer.
Arsenal have previously been linked with Williams, and remain interested in the 23-year-old. It seemed like the Gunners could have signed him last summer, but they opted to go for Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace instead. However, with both Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard having just one year left on their contracts, they could be in the market for Williams again.
If this is the case, United will need to act fast and pay up his release clause early in the summer to avoid Arsenal swooping in to sign the 23-year-old.
Williams signing could ‘unlock’ Matheus Cunha
By no means has Cunha struggled since he moved to Old Trafford, in fact, the former Wolves star has been one of Man United’s best players this season, especially since Carrick joined the club in January.
He scored in the Red Devils’ last game against Villa, and now has seven goals, and two assists in the Premier League this season. However, he has been playing out of position.
Cunha is a natural number 10, and would like to play behind the striker, but due to Man United’s lack of wide options, he has been playing as a winger. But, if the Red Devils were to sign Williams, it could allow Cunha to move into the middle, which could make him even better, which is an exciting thought for United fans.
