Credit to Wilcox: Man Utd dodge a bullet by signing 'elite' star over 'defeatist-looking' ace…

Manchester United have made some catastrophic transfer mistakes over the last decade, but they might be finally starting to turn a corner after what happened last summer.

In the previous summer transfer window, Manchester United transformed their attack by bringing in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha.

The Red Devils also secured the signature of Senne Lammens, who is already proving to be a clear upgrade on Andre Onana.

All four additions are showing early signs of being successes, to varying degrees, but it's certainly a positive sign for the club under the new regime, including the likes of Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada.

The Manchester club will be looking ahead to, potentially, another exciting window, but their clash at the weekend amplified their previous wins in the market.

Man Utd Dodged Huge Ollie Watkins Bullet

Manchester United dodged a huge bullet by opting to sign Sesko over Ollie Watkins in the summer transfer window, and there was some evidence on the weekend, with the former coming off the bench to score, while Watkins struggled.

Samuel Luckhurst has given credit to Wilcox for the decision, with United opting to go down the route of a young, up-and-coming striker, rather than a proven player with Premier League experience.

Luckhurst labelled Watkins a 'defeatist-looking' striker, and the England international has been a key reason why Villa have struggled in recent weeks.

Sesko, on the other hand, is flourishing, even if only off the bench.

Sesko vs Watkins - There's Only One Winner

Watkins is meant to be your guaranteed source of goals. An experienced option who has spent a large portion of his career in the Premier League, but it has not turned out that way this season.

Watkins has scored just eight Premier League goals this campaign from a total of 2207 minutes, while Sesko has managed nine in his debut season from just 1322 minutes.

Wilcox got this one right, going for the rawer, inexperienced option, and the Slovenian striker is flourishing even more than the England international.

United haven't got a lot right in recent years, but the signing of Sesko, described as 'elite', is a huge positive.
