Casemiro snubbed from BBC Team of the Week as Bruno Fernandes is only Man Utd star selected

Troy Deeney has big selections to make as he snubbed Brazilian duo Casemiro and Matheus Cunha from his BBC Sport Premier League Team of the Week. At least there was room for Bruno Fernandes after his masterclass display against Aston Villa.

Casemiro made a major impact in Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The 34-year-old midfield veteran dictated the tempo of the game and scored the opening goal to initially give United the lead over Villa.

Bruno Fernandes set up Casemiro for the first goal. Still, he was on alert again to assist Matheus Cunha to help United restore their lead following an equaliser from Ross Barkley.

United sealed the win when over Unai Emery’s side as substitute Benjamin Sesko came off the bench before hitting the back of the net.

I would pay a MAXIMUM of £___ per-week to Casemiro to extend his contract

Fill in the blank with your offer. Casemiro earns around £350k/week right now. Will you go high or walk away?

Casemiro broke the deadlock, but Troy Deeney hails Bruno Fernandes’ efforts in midfield

Fernandes rightly dominated the headlines following his performance against Villa.

The 31-year-old recorded two assists, taking his Premier League tally to 16 for the season and surpassing a club record previously set by David Beckham (15).

Fernandes continues to step up whenever United need him and that was the case against Villa on Sunday.

Speaking in his BBC Sport column, Troy Deeney praised Fernandes and picked him for his Team of the Week ahead of the likes of United teammate Casemiro.

“Sixteen assists this season, beating David Beckham’s record in a single Premier League campaign for the club,” Deeney said.

“A wonderful performance from him. He is ‘Mr Manchester United’.”

Fittingly, Fernandes was voted Man of the Match by United In Focus readers. Still, some United fans will feel that players like Casemiro, Cunha, and Harry Maguire could have all earned a place in the Team of the Week for their performances against Villa.

Deeney’s full team of the week: Aaron Ramsdale; Dominik Szobaszlai, William Saliba, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Jaka Bijol; Joe Willock, James Milner, Bruno Fernandes; Anthony Gordon, Rio Ngumoha, Max Dowman.

Man Utd’s next five fixtures

With United currently third and three points clear of Villa in the top four, the next five matches could be telling in the hunt for a Champions League spot.

It starts on Friday with an away trip to Bournemouth.

Then, after the international break, United host Leeds before travelling to Chelsea in the Premier League. They will then have back-to-back home matches against Brentford and Liverpool.

A strong run in those games could be enough to secure a spot in Europe’s most prestigious tournament.
