Only three Man Utd starters from dramatic 4-3 win over Liverpool remain: The squad has been ripped up since

It is two years since one of the most dramatic games at Old Trafford in recent memory. Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool.

During the post-Ferguson era there have been lots of lows. But that has made the highs even more worthy of celebration.

Manchester United’s 4-3 victory over Liverpool in the 2024 FA Cup quarter-final was an epic, crazy encounter that is one of the best ever games at Old Trafford – from any era.

United won the game in extra-time via a goal in the 120th minute from substitute Amad. Remarkably this was his first goal of the 2023/24 season.

The victory over Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool helped to wreck the German’s goodbye tour. It was United’s first win against them since the horrific away defeat 12 months earlier. When Amad’s goal went in, there was pure joy and elation for fans.

Amad’s goal came amid a wild extra-time period that saw Antony deployed as an emergency left-back, and Harry Maguire helping out in attack. Manager Erik ten Hag threw everything he had at the game, and it paid off. United went on to win the 2024 FA Cup two months later.

But now as we look back at United’s wild win over Liverpool, it is remarkable how the squad has changed in such a short period.

Only three players in the starting line-up in March 2024 are part of United’s first team squad two years later.

United’s squad turnover

The fact that only three starters remain from Manchester United’s famous FA Cup win over Liverpool reflects the huge squad turnover in the two subsequent summer transfer windows.

Erik ten Hag oversaw summer 2024, before his replacement Ruben Amorim was in charge in 2025.

Ineos have been pulling the strings with recruitment behind the scenes, and it’s largely been positive.

Entering the 2023/24 season, United spent money poorly on Hojlund, Mount, and Onana. This was the final pre-Ineos window.

More squad improvements are required in summer 2026, but we anticipate this being more focused on incomings than outgoings. United need to bulk out the squad to be able to compete in the Champions League once again.
