Man United have been linked to signing Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams in the summer.
Whether or not Carrick is the next permanent manager, Man United’s board will make sure they back the manager in the summer transfer market to turn this impressive United side into a potential title contender heading into next season.
Man United should avoid signing Williams
There is no doubt that Williams is an excellent player; he has proven for both Bilbao and the Spanish national team that he is a difference-maker, both on the ball and in creating chances.
This season, the 23-year-old has scored four goals and provided two assists in 19 La Liga matches, but is expected to cost around £87m based on his release clause. Reports suggest that United could be willing to sign Williams for that hefty fee, which is a substantial amount of money for a player who has only ever played in La Liga.
When you look at Man United’s recent success in the transfer market, they have signed proven Premier League players, who they trust to hit the ground running. We’ve seen the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha really shine at Old Trafford. United should target a proven Premier League winger instead...
Man United should sign Jarrod Bowen instead
Bowen is a proven Premier League talent, and he has shown that when in form, he can be one of the best wingers in the division, so it would provide less risk to sign Bowen rather than Williams, and likely a much lower transfer fee.
This season, the 29-year-old has also had a better season than Williams, despite being in a relegation battle. He has scored eight goals and provided six assists for the Hammers, who have seen a managerial change this season, too.
Bowen’s ability to adapt under different styles is ideal as United could see a new manager in the summer, but also he is able to play in multiple positions in attack, so he could be versatile for the next manager too.
