Former Jaap Stam has urged Manchester United to do “everything in their power” to keep captain Bruno Fernandes, insisting the midfielder remains central to any hopes of returning to the summit of the Premier League.
Fernandes has been one of Manchester United’s standout performers since arriving from Sporting CP, regularly contributing goals and assists while often carrying the team creatively. Despite periods of inconsistency around him, the midfielder has remained a focal point in United’s attacking play and a vocal leader within the squad.
Stam, who won multiple titles during his time at Old Trafford, believes Fernandes’ influence on and off the pitch makes him indispensable as United continue their rebuild. Speaking in his latest media appearance, the Dutchman highlighted the Portuguese playmaker’s leadership, creativity and consistency as key assets that cannot easily be replaced.
United have endured a transitional period in recent seasons, cycling through managers and struggling to match the dominance they once enjoyed domestically. While there have been signs of progress, Stam believes sustained success will depend on retaining top talent and adding further quality around a strong core.
‘He is extraordinary, putting in players in front of goal and you need to have these players,’ ex-United and Netherlands defender Stam told Viaplay. ‘We have a lot of discussions about Bruno and what he is and his mentality and how he can react to his team-mates at times.
‘But when you see his quality on the ball and putting player sin front of goal, it’s extraordinary.
‘You need to have these players in your team otherwise you’re never going to make that next step to win the title.’
With speculation often surrounding key players at major clubs, Stam’s comments reflect a broader concern among former players and supporters that Manchester United must avoid losing their most influential figures if they are to mount a serious title challenge again.
For Stam, the message is clear: keeping Fernandes is not just desirable — it is essential
