The Premier League Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel has found that it was the wrong decision to send off Newcastle United midfielder Jacob Ramsey against Manchester United.

Sunderland, however, were found to have benefited from a refereeing mishap after it was revealed Leeds United should have been awarded a penalty in their 1-0 win at Elland Road earlier this month. The Premier League KMI panel has logged that 18 errors have been made by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the top-flight this season.

Ramsey's second yellow against the Red Devils has been highlighted as one of the incorrect decisions. The midfielder was sent off by Peter Bankes, who felt that there had been simulation from the Englishman, after going to ground as the ball was picked up by Senne Lammens.

But the panel voted 3:2 in Ramsey's favour that his "left foor appears to slip as he goes past the 'keeper" and that it "wasn't an attempt to deceive the referee". From next season, VAR will be able to review second yellow cards but in this instance for this season, the technology cannot intervene.

Fortunately for Newcastle, the decision didn't come back to haunt them against Manchester United. William Osula scored late on to hand Michael Carrick his first defeat in temporary charge of the Old Trafford club after an unbeaten start.

Newcastle icon Alan Shearer was left outraged by the incident, he said: "The one at Newcastle, where he gave him another yellow card for diving. For that referee to be in that mindset to think 'he is actually conning me, you're a big cheat, you've made a massive dive and I'm going to show you another card'.

"For that referee to actually think 'he's gone through, he's tried to con me massively and he's dived'... He [Ramsey] didn't even look up.

"He didn't want a penalty, he didn't appeal or anything. It was a nonsense decision."

The Black Cats were found to have benefited from an error in their crucial win over Leeds United at Elland Road.

Habib Diarra's 70th-minute penalty was enough to earn three points for Regis Le Bris' side, but the flashpoint came when Luke O'Nien impeded Leeds' Pascal Struijk.

During the contest, VAR also ruled out Joe Rodon's goal denying Daniel Farke's side the lead before Sunderland went ahead six minutes later.

Speaking after the game, the Leeds boss said: "It's not even a question. What was VAR doing?

"It's tough to understand how this is not checked. If the referee watched it back he would say all day long it's a penalty.

"It's more for VAR, it's difficult for the referee to see."
