Liverpool's midfield has looked a shadow of its former self this season with one signing a priority.
As the Premier League champions, Liverpool should be able to control the tempo of a game at Anfield against a team battling relegation and on a horrific run of form.
This, above the result, was probably the biggest question that was being asked at full-time, especially when midfield is an area of the park that is unaffected by the injuries that have blighted the season. Last season it was the strongest area of the park, this term it has looked leggy and unable to compete with even the weakest of Premier League outfits. Given the players at his disposal, there is a reason why Arne Slot’s position is under threat.
Liverpool in Premier League transfer battle for Adam Wharton
According to TEAMtalk though, Liverpool are looking to address the problem and are set to do battle with Man United in the summer for a player who has long since looked like he would be the perfect fit alongside the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch. Crystal Palace playmaker Adam Wharton continues to look like he sees the game in slow motion and could be exactly the player that is needed in the Reds’ engine room.
The report claims that “Liverpool are competing with Manchester United for the capture of Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton” with his £60m Champions League agreement with the Eagles of particular interest to those looking to land a home-grown option who is ready to take the next step up at club level. United are set to lose Casemiro in the summer and have a similar issue in that they don’t have a player who can control the pace of a game in the manner in which Wharton does.
What Jamie Carragher has said about Liverpool’s midfield
Speaking after the dismal draw with Spurs, Jamie Carragher highlighted the midfield as a problem for Slot picking out two players in particular for criticism: “The longer the games go on, the more [Alexis] Mac Allister struggles,” the pundit said on Sky Sports, via Liverpool World.
“I think that’s a real problem for Liverpool that they need to address in midfield. Curtis Jones comes on, and the game goes end to end. He takes on the Florian Wirtz role, and I don’t know why; he’s not that player. There’s too much space when the game opens up, and Mac Allister can’t cover it.” A natural no.6 is a summer transfer priority if Liverpool are to regain the control of games that they once had.
