Man Utd ace might not wear No 7, but he shares more important identity with Beckham beyond assists – opinion

Bruno Fernandes made history on Sunday afternoon after he climbed ahead of Sir David Beckham for an impressive Manchester United feat at Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old Red Devils captain took his Premier League assist tally to 16 from 27 matches this season after Manchester United’s 3-1 home win over Aston Villa.

Bruno Fernandes is now the United player who holds the most assists in a single season, with the Portuguese midfielder shattering Sir David Beckham’s record.

Beckham pulled off his assist-making milestone after Man Utd’s iconic treble-winning season, with the ex-England captain registering 15 assists in the 1999-00 campaign.

Bruno Fernandes and Sir David Beckham’s profound emotional connection to Man Utd fans is a theme they share in common

Bruno Fernandes’ masterclass performance for Manchester United saw him earn two more assists to his name in the Red Devils’ huge win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Man Utd captain’s brace and surpassing of Sir David Beckham’s Premier League season assist record for the Red Devils showed the two shared a lot in common.

Fernandes might not wear the iconic United No 7 shirt, but the Portugal international shares the same affinity with Red Devils supporters as Beckham did in his career.

Beyond the mesmerising assist-making capabilities between the pair, there is a profound attachment from United fans to both Fernandes and Beckham.

Beckham’s relationship might have fractured with Sir Alex Ferguson in the tail end of his prolific spell before Man Utd sanctioned his £24.5m sale to Real Madrid in 2003.

However, the United legend remains a beloved figure at Old Trafford after his superstar rise did not hinder his performances on the pitch as a Red Devils player.

Fernandes’ stock value to United fans is similar to Beckham’s, with Red Devils supporters biting their nails over the future of the club without his influence there.

Sir David Beckham’s availability and work ethic are mirrored by what Bruno Fernandes offers to Man Utd now

Outside of his infamous ‘flying boot’ incident with iconic former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, it was hard to argue against Beckham’s elite mentality to the cause.

The fame came to him during the 1990s and 2000s after Beckham’s incredible rise at Man Utd and influential presence in the England national team for tournaments.

However, the 50-year-old never changed as a footballer for his commitment to his team, so much so that the likes of Roy Keane could not find a bone to pick with him.

“My worry would always be for any player if they’re doing that, and if they’re spending their money,” Roy Keane said alongside Beckham on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast in 2023.

“And again, good luck to them, but then if they weren’t coming in training properly and that became the priority.

“That was always my worry. But I never found it with Becks. So that’s why we never fell out.”

Just as Beckham carried himself as a professional, both on the pitch and off it, Fernandes has been no different in showing his elite work ethic to United.
