Vinicius Junior has explained the real reason behind his noteworthy celebration after scoring in Real Madrid's Champions League win at Manchester City. The Brazilian is back in the headlines after netting twice in England and making a telling gesture to the fans.
The Brazilian killed the Round of 16 tie with goals in either half, building on the 3-0 victory over the Premier League giants from the first leg. First, he converted from the penalty spot after missing a spot kick in the reverse fixture before sealing it with a second in the dying moments.
After his first strike, many noticed the celebration that the winger pulled out. He appeared to make what is being called a 'cry cry' gesture towards the home fans, while also putting his finger on his lips.

Following the full-time whistle, the Brazil international was on media duties with Amazon Prime. Unable to speak fluent English, Vinicius' answers were translated by the always impressive Alex Aljoe.
He was asked to explain the meaning behind his celebration, which caught everyone's attention. He replied by citing a banner Man City fans displayed before his most recent match at the Etihad Stadium in 2025. He explained:
"Well, the last time I came here to Manchester City, they were making fun of me and saying that I was crying about the Ballon d'Or.
"I wasn't disrespecting the fans but it was just a way for me to prove myself the Manchester City fanbase today."
Vinicius Junior's full post-match interview:
The meeting came just months after City's midfield maestro Rodri beat Vini to the Ballon d'Or award. The Real Madrid superstar wasn't best pleased when he heard the news and he boycotted the award ceremony, along with his Los Blancos colleagues.
In response, the Citizens' supporters unfurled a huge tifo with Rodri kissing his Ballon d'Or trophy accompanied by the words 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out'. A direct dig at Vinicius Jr, who had to settle for second place that year.

After being left disappointed by his failure to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma from the spot last week in Spain, the 2026 Ballon d'Or contender was delighted to have been given a second chance after Bernardo Silva's handball on the goalline.
"I was really disappointed not to score last week. Fede scored the three goals and then I really, really wanted to score that penalty but it wasn't to be. But he gave me confidence, he told me that today would be the day and I was able to score the penalty. Really happy about that," he said when asked about his delight at righting his previous wrong from 12 yards out.
