Newcastle United transfers: Odysseas Vlachodimos is set to be on the move this summer following his loan move to Sevilla.
Newcastle United are expected to prioritise the signing of a new goalkeeper during the upcoming summer transfer window as the club looks to address ongoing uncertainty in the position.
The goalkeeper position at Newcastle has come into sharper focus this season, following high-profile errors from Nick Pope, who was recently dropped in favour of loan signing Aaron Ramsdale
However, with the Magpies unlikely to trigger Ramsdale’s £20 million purchase option from Southampton, the goalkeeping department faces more changes this summer.
Odysseas Vlachodimos, Newcastle’s record goalkeeper signing, is currently enjoying a loan spell at Sevilla. But the Greek international is unlikely to come into Eddie Howe’s immediate thinking for next season despite a successful stint in Spain.
The 31-year-old joined the Magpies from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2024 as part of the PSR deal that saw academy graduate Elliot Anderson move to the City Ground. While Forest paid £35 million for Anderson, Newcastle paid a reported £20million for Vlachodimos.
Despite the significant fee, Vlachodimos has managed just one substitute appearance for Newcastle competitively.

Sevilla want to sign Newcastle United goalkeeer permanently
His fortunes have changed in La Liga, where he has made 25 appearances for Sevilla. Following a recent 5-2 defeat to Barcelona at the Camp Nou, Sevilla’s sporting director, Antonio Cordon, expressed a strong desire to keep the goalkeeper on a permanent basis
Speaking to DAZN, Cordon said: “We’d like to keep him. We’ll see, he’s very happy in the city. It’s a city that’s important for every player who comes here. Nobody wants to leave, and he certainly intends to stay, but we know his club knows he’s doing very well. There are big clubs in Europe that are also following him, and well, we’ll have to wait and see.”
Despite this interest, Sevilla may struggle to finalise a deal as they are currently unlikely to have the funds to complete a permanent transfer.
Vlachodimos on NUFC
The goalkeeper has been open about the frustration he felt during his first season on Tyneside.
Speaking in December, he admitted: “Of course there was frustration that I didn’t play more. If you look back in my career, I have played plenty of games, Champions League games, international games with Greece, I always want to play and you’re a bit disappointed if you don’t play and don’t get the chance.”
Vlachodimos also highlighted that he joined the club with different expectations regarding his role.
“I thought I would play more games, to be fair,” he said. “I came with a different outlook and ambition but things didn’t go as I thought it would.
“It was a new experience to me because I’ve always played but I learned something from it. I stayed fit, kept training and I think it made me the goalkeeper I am now.
“Why I didn’t catch the game time that was spoken to me about before I moved? We need to ask other people about that.”
Despite his lack of minutes, Vlachodimos still holds an affinity with the club and the city. A year ago this week, the goalkeeper picked up a Carabao Cup winners’ medal following Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.
His substitute appearance in Newcastle’s 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon en route to winning the competition remains his only competitive outing for the club to date.
Regarding a potential return to Newcastle, Vlachodimos said: “I don’t know what the future holds but of course I’d come back.
“Me and my family, since day one at Newcastle, have felt very good. I think we fit well with the club, I like the people at the club and the Geordies, whether that’s at the supermarket or out and around.
“Newcastle is a fantastic club. But I also want to play for them and to be important on the pitch.”
With the future of Vlachodimos and Ramsdale unresolved, the Magpies face some major calls this summer as they look to finally solve their goalkeeper conundrum.
