Liverpool face a Barcelona threat to bring Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni to the Premier League in the summer.
The Serie A side took the centre-back from Atalanta in 2017 and sent him back on loan immediately. A year later, he joined Parma on a season-long loan deal.
Bastoni settled in quickly at the San Siro and has been a regular since the 2019/20 season. His rise in recent years has seen several clubs, including Liverpool, keep an eye on him.
The Italy international has started 24 league matches this season and Inter Milan have kept eight clean sheets when he’s been on the pitch. Below are his stats per game from Serie A.
Interceptions: 0.9
Tackles: 1.8
Ground duels won: 2.8
Aerial duels won: 2/0
Ball recovery: 3.8
Dribbled past: 0.3
Errors leading to goal: 0
His performances have seen Liverpool consider signing him in the summer. Earlier this season, Sport Witness relayed news that Fabio Paratici showed keen interest in taking him to Tottenham Hotspur.
Paratici left Spurs for Fiorentina in February, and it’s unclear whether Spurs are still keen. They’d have a difficult job convincing the player.
Deal difficult for Liverpool
Inter Milan are ‘seriously considering’ parting ways with the 26-year-old after this season. That’s according to Gazzetta dello Sport, who state his sale can help fund the Nerazzurri’s summer market.
Recent svaluations for Alessandro Bastoni have pushed the priced as high as €70-80m. The Italian club could now accept a €50m offer in the summer, believe Gazzetta. His agent has registered Barcelona’s interest, while the newspaper makes no mention of Liverpool or any other club.
Wednesday’s edition of Sport relays this and provides their own updates on this case. The Reds get a mention as they’re showing interest in the player.
In fact, the Catalan newspaper report the Anfield club have made enquires. It’s not clear whether the initial contact was with his agent, Inter Milan or both.
Either way, Liverpool can take advantage of his side’s need to sell to sign him for €50m.
However, it won’t be easy because Bastoni only wants to move to the Camp Nou, say Sport. This put Barcelona in a comfortable position, as long as they are willing to meet the fee demand.
It’s worth noting given Sport is a Catalan newspaper, and biased towards Barcelona, that they would say that.
Why Reds shouldn’t give up
Alessandro Bastoni
Arne Slot has Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni as the four centre-backs at Anfield.
Konaté’s contract expires in June while Gomez and 34-year-old Van Dijk both have contracts until 2027. Leoni has been on the sidelines since he suffered a serious injury in September.
If Konaté refuses to sign an extension, Liverpool need an experienced defender. Bastoni could be the ideal candidate, considering his experience, both with Inter Milan and Italy.
Transfermarkt value Bastoni, who has a contract until 2028, at €80m, and the Serie A side’s €50m price make him a bargain. Therefore, Liverpool need to find a way to convince the player, to get ahead of Barcelona.
