Everton's Idrissa Gana Gueye releases statement after AFCON title stripped from Senegal

Everton duo Idrissa Gana Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye will be feeling a lot of different emotions today.

CAF have announced that Senegal’s AFCON title has been stripped, with Morocco crowned the new champions.

Senegal walked off the pitch following a series of controversial decisions in the final earlier this year, so it has been declared that they forfeited the match.

Idrissa Gana Gueye says ‘no one can take away’ the experience of AFCON win

Gueye has posted a picture of Senegal lifting the AFCON trophy aloft after beating Morocco 1-0 in extra time back in January.

The 36-year-old wrote a short statement alongside it, which read: “Titles, trophies, medals… all of that is fleeting.

“What truly matters is that every supporter can return home to their family. The Senegalese people have shown their true character: dignified in victory, dignified in adversity.

“That is Teranga. We know what we experienced that night in Rabat. And that, God willing, no one can take away from us.”

Ndiaye also posted an image of himself celebrating after the AFCON win, with the caption: “Earned not given!!!”

Senegal have now announced that they will be appealing the decision: “‘The Senegalese Football Federation denounces this unjust, unprecedented, and unacceptable decision, which discredits African football.

“In defence of its rights and the interests of Senegalese football, the Federation will initiate, as soon as possible, an appeal procedure before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.”
