Stat Attack – Burnley v AFC Bournemouth

Written by Matt Stevenson

Here is the xG from the Burnley match, which was disappointingly fairly even and goalless until AFCB had two big chances at the death. But neither went in, so it remained 0-0. The game started quickly, though, with chances immediately at both ends. First for Anthony, who beat Hill but dragged his effort wide (rated 1 in 16). From the goal kick, AFCB broke, Kroupa played in Evanson, who went around the keeper, but his effort was cleared off the line (3 in 10). Kroupi then had a shot blocked (1 in 12). In the 24th minute, Flemming poked at a loose ball following a corner (1 in 4, but this seems overestimated). The next three good chances fell to Burnley as AFCB stuttered, Foster delayed too long, allowing his shot to be blocked (1 in 12). From the corner, Scott blocked a close-range Humphries effort (1 in 10), and in the 41st minute, poor AFCB defending allowed Anthony to meet a Ward-Prowse corner unmarked near the far edge of the six-yard box, but his volley smashed against the crossbar (1 in 4). At half time, the xG was Burnley 0.92, AFCB 0.74.

The second half saw AFCB come back into the game, but up to the 66th minute had only a flicked Senesi header from a Hill through (1 in 8) that hit the side netting. In betw, een Flemming put a header over (1 in 4). Our next chance came from Jimenez, who appeared to make an attacking difference, who passed into Evanilson, who swept a difficult chance wide of the far corner (rated 1 in 4, but this is overestimated). In the 73rd minute, Hill got his head on a corner, but the ball was too high (so the 23% rating was also overestimated). Neither side was creating chances until the death, when AFCB fashioned a glorious chance. Scott had quick feet and released Truffert, who drove a cross into the middle. Unal was unmarked but connected poorly, and it went wide (1 in 2). You’d have backed a match-fit, confident player to bury it, but unfortunately, Unal looks neither at the minute. There was still one more chance, with Truffert finding Brooks, whose flicked header (1 in 3) agonisingly went wide of the far post. At the final whistle, the xG was Burnley 1.40, AFCB 2.55, with Understat having a smaller margin: Burnley 1.68, AFCB 2.37.

There were two changes from the Brentford game with Smith (15) replacing Jimenez at right back, and Kroupi (22) coming in for an injured Adams, with Christie (10) dropping deeper and Kroupi playing as the CAM. The first changes were in the 65th minute with Jimenez (20) replacing Smith in a straight swap and Adli (21) coming on for Christie, playing on the right with Tavernier (16) moving from there to a central position. In the 80th minute, Kroupi was withdrawn for Brooks (7), who appeared to play in the CAM role, until Rayan (37) was subbed for Unal (26) with AFCB playing a front two, with Brooks moving to the left side.
