One of Leeds United’s out-on-loan prospects missed out through injury in his manager’s final game before being sacked.
Harry Gray was a noticeable absentee when the Rotherham United squad was named at Peterborough United on Tuesday night, ahead of a 5-0 drubbing. The Leeds United striker has been a regular for the Millers since moving on loan for the second half of the 2025/26 season in January. In a dozen appearances the 17-year-old has enjoyed more than 1,000 minutes of senior action, which was precisely why the Whites loaned him out to the League One relegation battlers in the first place.
But Gray, who has two goals to his name so far during the loan, was not on the team sheet for the midweek game in Peterborough due to a slight hamstring issue. Without him Rotherham were drubbed and on Wednesday morning the club confirmed the departure of under-fire boss Hamshaw.
In a statement they said: ““The board has informed Matt that the difficult decision had been reached to relieve him of his duties with immediate effect. It is with a heavy heart that we end our affiliation with an individual who has strong historical connections and a clear passion for Rotherham United. "But, with the club currently six points from safety in Sky Bet League One, it was deemed necessary to take action to give the team the best possible opportunity of preserving our League One status in our remaining games. The process to appoint a new first-team manager is under way.”
It has not yet been confirmed if Gray will remain with the Millers to rehab from what is thought to be a minor injury, or return to Thorp Arch.
