Forget Steve Holland, Leny Yoro says Man Utd made another‘really important’addition to Michael Carrick’s staff

Leny Yoro feels that Steve Holland’s key appointment in Michael Carrick’s Manchester United coaching staff is mirrored by another major figure at Old Trafford right now.

Michael Carrick had not worked with Steve Holland before the former England assistant manager became his right-hand man at Manchester United.

Holland, who worked closely with Sir Gareth Southgate for the Three Lions, took up the role of assistant head coach under Man Utd interim boss Carrick in January.

The 55-year-old is a leading figure in the current United coaching staff alongside first-team coaches Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans and Jonathan Woodgate.

Leny Yoro puts the focus on Man Utd coach Jonathan Woodgate amid the influence of Steve Holland under Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick immediately turned to an all-too-familiar face in Jonathan Woodgate after he was appointed Manchester United interim boss until the end of the season.

The 44-year-old United legend had worked closely with Woodgate at Championship side Middlesbrough before Carrick was dismissed from his managerial post in 2025.

Woodgate was a first-team coach for Carrick at Middlesbrough and the 46-year-old former defender took up the same post at Man Utd in January after his appointment.

Leny Yoro talked up the United assistant coach’s past experience of being a professional defender, with Woodgate playing for the likes of Real Madrid.

“Yeah, of course, I think Woody is really important in this staff also,” he said on the Inside Carrington podcast.

“Steve Holland also, but Woody and Jonny are more with the central defenders.”

Leny Yoro reveals the knock-on effect that Jonny Evans and Jonathan Woodgate are having on him at Man Utd

Yoro played alongside Jonny Evans in his debut season at Old Trafford after United paid an initial £52.18m transfer fee to sign him from French side Lille in 2024.

Evans was in his second playing spell with the Red Devils and the 38-year-old Northern Irishman’s contract expired last summer before he retired from football.

Yoro insisted that both Woodgate and Evans have played a key part not only in his development, but also for other United players like Ayden Heaven this season.

“We do extra training with them and, of course, with the experience they have, they give us some tips, some things to improve,” he added.

“For me and Ayden, this is really important.”

Carrick has won seven of his nine Premier League matches in charge of the Red Devils since Ruben Amorim was axed as Man Utd manager back in January.
