Wieffer reveals a big reason for right-back role as he faces Slot and Liverpool

And it is not unlike the team plan of which he was part with Arne Slot at Feyenoord.

The player and coach go head-to-head on Saturday as Slot and Liverpool visit the Seagulls at the Amex.

Wieffer was a highly effective defensive midfielder for Feyenoord as they won the Eredivisie title in 2022-23 under Slot’s guidance.

The current Liverpool boss brought him in from Excelsior and played a large part in his development in that role.

By the time the two caught up with each other at the Amex towards the end of last season, Wieffer was operating in his version of a right-back role.

He has remained there and spoken in quite positive terms about it.

His argument is that, while he might prefer to be in midfield, the niche carved out for him by Fabian Hurzeler is getting him on to a Premier League pitch on a weekly basis.

But it also brings a tactical advantage as Wieffer plays a similar role to that he saw from full-backs at Feyenoord.

Right-back is seen a position which basically entails stopping the opposition but there is a flipside to that.

Talking to The Argus deep beneath the main stand at Sunderland after Saturday’s 1-0 win, Wieffer said: “I spoke with him (Slot) a little bit about it, but he's not surprised.

“I'm really versatile, I can play in multiple positions. But also I can come into midfield. Sometimes I kind of do that more often.

“But also at Feyenoord we liked to play with the full-backs a little bit more inside, so I try to do that as well and be a little bit like attacking a bit more.

“The (opposition) winger has to follow me. They don't really like that most of the time.

“So then I am most of the time free, a free player on the pitch. That is also what we try to do a little bit.”

The fruits of that have been clear to see in Albion games at times.

How often has Wieffer suddenly appeared in an advanced, even a centre-forward, position with no opponent for close company?

There was an example at Sunderland when he teed up a chance for Diego Gomez to potentially make it 2-0.

There was the header from a Yankuba Minteh cross in the 1-0 defeat by Arsenal.

And there was a similar moment in open play in the first half when he was right up there with Jack Hinshelwood, who actually had the header and sent it wide.

Asked whether Slot might have missed a trick with him in Rotterdam, Wieffer laughed and said: “No, he still thinks I'm better in midfield, but he said I can play there and you see now that it's going well.”

Wieffer has also been part of back-to-back clean sheets on the road and a solid display at the back against Arsenal, even though they went down to a single goal.

In fact, the one time since losing at Fulham in which they have really suffered at the back was in the previous game with Liverpool, in the FA Cup.

Wieffer said: “We have loads of young good players, but sometimes it's good to have like players with loads of experience to pull it over the line.

“I think we had games last season when we struggled in the last couple of minutes and now it feels quite relaxed to be on the pitch and you know that it's going the way you want.”
