Rock bottom | Former star’s postscript to Hammers career – West Ham News

Depending on how you look at it, this might be a story of ‘triumph over adversity‘ rather than a sad postscript to a former Hammers great’s fading career. In all likelihood – it is both.

West Ham’s leading Premier League goalscorer Michail Antonio finally played in league action last week, completing a comeback to competitive football that seemed impossible after his December 2024 car crash that left his leg broken in four places and the Hammers’ then number nine lucky to be alive.

Testimony to his determination to recover, Antonio spent many months in painful rehab and trained both with West Ham and other Premier League and Championship sides before, it seems, being denied a chance at a contract in English football by a muscle injury at the worst time last winter.

Antonio finally headed to Qatar and made it back onto the pitch last week for a debut for his adopted team Al Sailiya who were beaten 4-0 by Al-Duhail in the Qatar Stars League.

Rated lowest performing (bar one) of the 22 players on the pitch, Mikey scored a modest 5.7 from flashscore.com with his team now sitting rock bottom in the Qatar league.

Sad to see the former Premier League hotshot and Hammers legend now struggling – but at the same time Mikey’s bittersweet experience serves as a shining example of triumph over adversity, just to be pulling on the boots and leading the line for 75 minutes.

Compared with so many players who drop to the treatment table for months at the slightest twinge (mentioning no names).. Whoever he plays for, Antonio is a true inspiration. Take it from me – if you’ve been fortunate enough never to suffer from what can often be a life-changing injury – what he has achieved in getting back on a football pitch at all – at any professional level, frankly, is incredible.

We wish him well.
