West Ham United assistant manager Paco Jémez has explained the Premier League side have been very low on morale.

The 55-year-old has always been the first team coach throughout his career until his Hammers move on January 15th. He became part of Nuno Espírito Santo’s backroom staff and has had an instant impact.

West Ham appointed Nuno in September, after parting ways with Graham Potter. His place was in danger prior to Jémez’s arrival as the London club went on a 10-match winless streak.

The Hammers were in the relegation zone, 14 points away from safety. Since the Spaniard joined as the assistant manager, they’ve played 11 matches, losing two against Chelsea and Liverpool.

This includes a league win over Tottenham Hotspur and draws against Manchester United and Manchester City. Nuno’s side also made it to the FA Cup quarter final, where they face Leeds United on April 5th.

The results in recent weeks haven’t helped them get out of the danger zone. However, it did put them in a battle to avoid relegation. The Hammers are now 18th in the table, level on points with 17th placed Nottingham Forest and a point behind 16th placed Spurs.

Jémez on West Ham’s struggles

Wednesday’s edition of Diario de Ibiza has published an interview with Jémez. He had two spells with UD Ibiza [2021-22] and [2024-25] and therefore, the newspaper local to them have interviewed him.

He left Ibiza in October and Nuno convinced him to join him in London. The assistant boss now compares his time in London with his former club, and how the situation has changed in two months.

“West Ham’s situation was even worse than what I found in Ibiza. What we’ve done in so few matches is no easy feat in such a competitive league,” he said.

“More than tactical issues, the first thing was to change the dynamic and the morale, which was very low. Not only of the players, but also of everyone involved.

“We had to bring joy, make training sessions more dynamic, and get the team to play with less pressure. Little by little, the team has been finding a different rhythm.

“We believe in staying up, without a doubt. It’s not over yet. There are eight games left, and everything is decided now.”

“We’ve managed to level the playing field. Before, we were far behind; now everything looks different. There’s more confidence and more joy.”
