Michael Carrick believes there is more to come from Kobbie Mainoo, despite hailing the 20-year-old's latest "really impressive" performance in the centre of midfield for Manchester United.

Mainoo didn't start a single Premier League game for United under Ruben Amorim this season, but he has started in all nine since Carrick took charge, with his performances going from strength to strength.

The academy graduate quickly found his feet after being plunged back in under Carrick, excelling in the Manchester derby, and his partnership with Casemiro has been a bedrock of United's fine form under their 44-year-old head coach.

Mainoo's fine performances have him pushing for an England recall this week, with Thomas Tuchel set to name his squad for friendlies with Japan and Uruguay on Friday, and Carrick is confident we still haven't seen the best of Mainoo yet.

“He can always improve on a lot of things, that’s the age he's at just for starters," he said. "There's so much more to come and develop and that's just natural, that's not a negative on Kobbie, that just the stage he's in in his career, so hopefully he has got a lot layers to improve and keep developing on that.

"I think he's done really well. Not having a lot of football for a period of time to come in and play a run of games and find your rhythm. I think he did that really quickly and there's a natural kind of flow really and I thought he was really good again on the weekend.

"Putting in a performance where he did a little bit of everything and controlled the game and spells when he had to defend and it was really impressive."
