Melker Ellborg has received a senior international call-up for Sweden.
The 22-year-old stopper signed for the Black Cats during the January transfer window, sealing a move from Malmo FF. After initially deputising for Robin Roefs, Ellborg has been thrust into first team action in recent weeks due to a hamstring injury sustained by the Dutchman during last month’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.
A clean sheet on his full debut against Leeds United has been followed by subsequent outings against Port Vale and Brighton and Hove Albion, and with Roefs facing a race against time to be fit for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear Derby at St. James’ Park, there is still a possibility that Ellborg could start against Newcastle United this weekend.
Before then, however, the Sunderland talent has been rewarded for his recent performances with international recognition from Sweden head coach Graham Potter. The ex-Chelsea boss has seen fit to include Ellborg in his latest squad ahead of their crucial World Cup qualification semi-final against Ukraine later this month.
Sweden are currently beset by injury issues, with the likes of Alexander Isak, Dejan Kulusevski, Viktor Johansson, Emil Holm, Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, Alexander Bernhardsson, and Emil Krafth all sidelined. Nevertheless, Ellborg will join up with a team that includes a number of recognisable faces, including Premier League stars Viktor Gyokeres, Anthony Elanga, and Victor Lindelof.
A win against Ukraine on March 26th would see Sweden progress to a play-off final, where they will host the winner of a semi-final between Poland and Albania. Defeat would, however, lead to Ellborg and his teammates playing the loser of that clash in a subsequent friendly.

Wilson Isidor switches international allegiance
Elsewhere, Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor has confirmed that he is switching international allegiances, and will now represent Haiti ahead of this summer’s upcoming World Cup.
The 25-year-old has long since been linked with the Grenadiers, and confirmed his decision in a statement on social media. He said: “Dear friends, Haitian brothers and sisters. I am writing to you today to announce my decision to respond favourably to the call of the national team. Over the past few months, I have received an avalanche of messages from you, asking me to join the Grenadiers.
“I took the time to reflect, because I wanted to do things right for the country and the balance of the entire team, not to rush things. But know that I have seen all your messages and that they have touched me to the depths of my heart. I am proud to now be part of the selection, and to be able to honour our people, our nation.
“Together, we have the opportunity to write history and live great adventures. I can't wait to discover the fervour of our Diaspora and, above all, to meet you. See you soon, Wilson.”
