Manchester United will be looking to bolster their ranks when the next transfer window opens up

Manchester United will step up their ‘interest’ in Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, according to a report by TEAMtalk. They are being heavily linked with a swoop for the player this summer. Rivals Liverpool have also been mentioned as potential suitors.

The Red Devils won 3-1 at home against Aston Villa last time out. They remain 3rd in the Premier League table as they look to cement their position in the Champions League positions. Next up is an away trip to AFC Bournemouth on Friday night.

United could see Gomes as someone to bolster their midfield department. If he joined, he would give them more competition and depth in the middle of the park. They need to find a long-term replacement for Casemiro, who is leaving at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Gomes, 25, has been a key player for Wolves since his move there in 2023. Prior to his switch to England, he rose up through the academy at Flamengo. He went on to become an important member of their first-team squad before he left South America.

He has made 123 appearances in all competitions since moving to Molineux and he has scored eight goals. His current club face a serious battle to retain his services amid attention from elsewhere. They are set to be relegated to the Championship under Rob Edwards and there is no chance Gomes will want to play in the second tier.

Wolves boss Edwards said earlier this month: "He really responded. I think he's a wonderful player and he's shown real glimpses and a lot of good stuff since we arrived as well. But I think it's been hard for him because in a team that has struggled at times or if you've not got the results, it can be challenging. You can think 'I've made a big move here' and then you question things.

"I understand it, but he really, really stepped up the other night and that's the level that we want to see from him all of the time now. It's only going to benefit him going forward if he continues to perform like that."
