Man Utd's worst ever signing Jadon Sancho lined up for familiar return

Jadon Sancho will be a free agent this summer amid signs that he could return to Borussia Dortmund for a third time.

There is no denying that Jadon Sancho will go down as one of Manchester United’s worst-ever transfers.

Costing a whopping £73 million to sign from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, Sancho could leave Old Trafford this summer for free after a third loan spell away from the club.

Sancho has spent the season at Aston Villa, who look unlikely to sign him when his United contract expires this summer. That raises a question about where the England international will be playing his football next season?

Where does Jadon Sancho rank amongst Man Utd’s WORST-EVER signings?

Would you put him above Antony? Alexis Sanchez? What went wrong for him?

Borussia Dortmund keen on Jadon Sancho deal

It’s no shock to anyone that Sancho’s stock has fallen. Over his 83 appearances for United, the 25-year-old winger scored just 12 goals and registered half as many assists.

To make matters worse, Sancho struggled to perform at Chelsea last season and he has hardly pulled up trees at Villa Park.

Years of underwhelming performances could impact Sancho in terms of potential destinations this summer, but not if Borussia Dortmund come back in for his signature.

According to The Times, Dortmund are ‘optimistic’ that they can persuade Sancho to return for a third stint at the Bundesliga club.

United’s recruitment has been criticised for years, but Sancho is arguably the worst example of that, with the Red Devils not expecting to receive any money for the former Man City and Watford academy star.

Sancho emerged as a talent in the Dortmund first team, and returned on loan in January 2024 for the second half of the season before helping the side reach the Champions League final.

He has played a total of 158 games for Dortmund, which is more than he managed at any other club, on top of 53 goals and 67 assists.

This is certainly a transfer to keep an eye out for because Sancho could join worse clubs than Dortmund this summer.

Jadon Sancho eyes Europa League quarter-finals

Perhaps the biggest positive for Sancho this season is Villa’s involvement in the Europa League. It means he is getting a steady flow of minutes on the pitch, not that it makes any difference to his situation at Old Trafford.

Villa hold a one-goal lead over Lille ahead of a second-leg tie in the round of 16 on Thursday night.

Sancho, who missed United’s 3-1 win over Villa on Sunday, is expected to feature for Unai Emery’s side.

Villa are currently three points behind United in the Premier League, and may need to win the Europa League to secure qualification back into the Champions League.
