Stunning update during Harry Gray’s Rotherham loan – Expectations have plummeted

Leeds United forward Harry Gray has been toiling away on loan at Rotherham United since mid-January. The Millers are staring down the barrel at relegation to League Two.

This season needed to be one where Harry Gray left the club to get his first proper taste of senior football away from Elland Road. He made his debut in a cameo against Stoke City in April 2025. That was the day Leeds secured promotion back to the Premier League.

He enjoyed a very bright start on loan at Rotherham since joining in January. However, it has since gone unfortunately quiet for Gray as Rotherham’s relegation reality sets in.

Harry Gray injured for Rotherham United’s 5-0 Peterborough defeat – Matt Hamshaw sacked as a result

Gray’s hopes of a midweek masterclass away at Peterborough United on Tuesday night were dashed when he was absent from the matchday squad.

It was revealed that the forward is carrying a minor hamstring issue that saw him unable to feature. He was forced to watch from the sidelines as his Millers side were resoundingly battered 5-0.

This Tuesday night drubbing was the first game that Gray has missed for Rotherham since signing on loan. So far, Gray has amassed 1046 minutes for the South Yorkshire club. In that time, he’s notched two goals in consecutive games, at the end of January.

That five-goal beating at the hands of the Posh was the final straw for Matt Hamshaw at the New York Stadium. It’s been confirmed on Wednesday morning that the 44-year-old has been sacked from his position.

Rotherham United replace Matt Hamshaw with Lee Clark, Harry Gray set for major late-season overhaul

Rotherham are slumped in 22nd in League One after their latest defeat. Consequently, they sit a worrying six points adrift of safety with only nine games left to play.

This decision sparks a drastic change for both the Millers and Gray in the final nine games of the league campaign. It didn’t take long for the League One strugglers to find their replacement, confirming the appointment of Lee Clark on Wednesday. It’s certainly an eye-opener.

The former Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City boss supposedly announced his retirement from coaching back in December 2023. But, the 53-year-old is now back in the dugout with Gray’s development entrusted under his watch.

Leeds will be content with Gray’s assimilation into the senior game. However, it would be ideal if he can hit some sort of impressive form in the third tier before his return to Thorp Arch in July.

Rotherham face three bottom-half sides in their last run of games. In turn, they will need to pick up regular points if they want to avoid the drop. The decision to bring Clarke back to the EFL after years away from the game is definitely a bold one.

“Most recently, the Wallsend-born boss took charge of Al-Merrikh Sporting Club of the Sudan Premier League and he returns to management on his native shores with the Millers in an attempt to battle against relegation in Sky Bet League One,” his arrival statement reads.

Millers fans have reacted about as you’d expect on the decision to wheel out Clark for this Hail Mary survival bid. Expectations are incredibly low.
