Confirmed: EFL club appoint ex-Sunderland and Newcastle United player as new head coach

Ex-Sunderland midfielder Lee Clark has taken over at relegation-threatened Rotherham United

The Millers are currently battling to retain their League One status, and find themselves 22nd in the table, five points adrift of Blackpool above them, albeit with a game in hand. On Tuesday, they suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Peterborough United - a result that ultimately prompted the club to part company with boss Matt Hamshaw.

With a trip to league leaders Lincoln City next up, Rotherham have acted swiftly to bring in a replacement, however, sealing Clark’s arrival at the New York Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

A statement from the Millers explaining Clark’s appointment said: “Rotherham United are delighted to confirm that Lee Clark has been appointed as our first team manager on a deal until the end of the 2025/26 season.

“The Millers have moved swiftly to install the vastly-experienced operator to the managerial hotseat at AESSEAL New York Stadium on a short-term contract following confirmation of Matt Hamshaw’s departure this morning.

“The 53-year-old can call upon experience from a successful stint across the county with Huddersfield Town, while his CV is also decorated by time spent with the likes of Birmingham City, Blackpool and Kilmarnock.

“Most recently, the Wallsend-born boss took charge of Al-Merrikh Sporting Club of the Sudan Premier League and he returns to management on his native shores with the Millers in an attempt to battle against relegation in Sky Bet League One. The club will hold a press conference to unveil Lee as our new manager tomorrow during which he will preview the weekend’s trip to face Lincoln City, where he will oversee his first fixture as Rotherham United manager.”

Lee Clark’s career path

Born in Wallsend, Clark started his playing career at Newcastle United, and would go on to make almost 200 senior appearances for his boyhood club before sealing a switch to Sunderland in 1997. He would then play for Fulham before eventually returning to Newcastle prior to hanging up his boots in 2006.

Since then, Clark has enjoyed a nomadic career in the dugout. After a lengthy stint with Huddersfield Town, he spent subsequent spells at Birmingham City, Blackpool, Kilmarnock, and Bury. In 2019, he took charge of non-league outfit Blyth Spartans before making an unorthodox move to Sudan, where he would record two stints at top flight outfit Al-Merrikh, bookending a brief time in Oman with Al-Ittihad.
